10 Things to Get Rid of Before You Move

Moving can be a stressful time, but on the bright side it’s also a wonderful time to purge your old unwanted items and start fresh in your new home. The upside of purging before you move is a cheaper and easier move! Not sure where to start, we've got you covered.

  1. It's time to get rid of extra cans and boxes of food and anything that’s expired. Pro tip: Resist the urge to stock up on groceries before the move and use what you have. Cans of food are heavy and awkward to pack.
  2. Extra bottles of booze. Same as above, and yes certain bottles of booze can expire.
  3. Cleaning supplies.
  4. That pile of outdated electronics, the old phones, laptops and remote controls. And while you’re at it throw all those random cords and chargers away.
  5. Anything that doesn’t match or is broken. Think sheets, towels, cups, plates, silverware and Tupperware without the covers.
  6. Old decor; pictures you know longer love, half burned candles, and all those clear vases you got from the florist.
  7. Clothes that don’t fit.
  8. Books. But only if you don’t love them. I’m a huge fan of books and have a lot of them myself but let’s face it books like cans of food and bottles of booze, they're heavy and very difficult to move.
  9. Instruction manuals. If you still have the appliances leave them for the new owners if you don’t have the appliances throw them away. Pro tip: instruction manuals can be found online.
  10. Cans of paint, old tile, wallpaper and old flooring.

Despite what you may read on other popular blog sites, please do not leave leftover paint cans behind, unless the new buyers have approved it. Talk to your Realtor before you assume and if you do get approval to leave any items behind make sure they are clearly labeled.
