You know what this industry has taught me? People worry too much about resale. Especially when it comes to paint. Yes, REALTORS like neutral colors when selling, but that doesn’t mean you have to live with them. Because here’s the thing, walls don’t stay perfect forever.
We like to think that if we update this now we won’t have to update that later and while that’s true of a few things; hardwood floors, a new roof, plumbing or electrical work, it’s not true for paint. Paint isn’t an update that lasts, paint is maintenance, it needs regular upkeep to stay looking its best.
Our houses get dirty, it’s a fact, even if you don’t use a room on a daily basis, furniture gets moved, sunlight streams in and well things get dusty. Which you don’t notice on a day to day basis. But move a picture frame that’s been in the same spot for 2 years or so and you’ll know what I mean.
REALTORS love a fresh coat of paint because it goes a long way in freshening up a home. It instantly updates the look and feel of a space, even neutral colors have trends. Anyone remember the beige of the ’90s and the grays of the 2000s? And buyers love a fresh coat of paint because it gives the home a clean, updated and well-maintained look.
But again, you don’t have to live with it. Unless you plan to sell within the year, I say paint your walls whatever color you want. Because at the end of the day, your home isn’t just an asset, it’s where life happens. It’s where memories are made.
Somewhere along the way, we stopped thinking of our homes as places of comfort and started seeing them only as investments. And yes, I know what you’re thinking: “But my home is an investment.” You’re right. For many of us, it’s the biggest financial decision we’ll ever make.
But does that mean we shouldn’t enjoy it?
So go ahead, paint your walls that deep green or moody blue, because when it’s time to sell, I’m 99% sure you’ll be painting anyway.
